New Year Overseas: More Than A 14-Hour Time Difference

Happy New Year, one and all! I hope that this Year of the Dragon
brings you immense happiness and prosperity. With so many people
making the traditional journey to their families’ home at this time,
many ask me if I went home to America to spend New Year’s with
my family. I am flattered that they believe I can afford to travel
during this insanely hectic time, but for the fifth year in a row,
I spent an even happier vacation right here in Japan. I believe that
“neshogatsu,” is quickly becoming one of my favorite words in the
Japanese language.
The image of neshogatsu: sitting under the kotatsu, watching TV,
eating, drinking, and sleeping seems somewhat negatively charged,
but I can’t imagine anything more relaxing. Even for a lazy New Year,
it was still more eventful than 90% of all New Years spent in back
home in the United States. Without even leaving Osaka, I had
traditional New Year noodles, visited a shrine, got my New Year
fortune (chukichi－not too bad!), saw my wife’s side of the family,
passed out money to our nieces and nephews, cleaned the house,
gave our kitchen a vacation, and said, “Happy New Year!” about 9000 times.
Back home, New Year’s Eve is really just a good time for a party.
It can be a small, private party at home with a few snacks, or
a big outdoor countdown event with thousands of people. Children
are allowed to stay up until midnight just this once. There will be a
lot of drinking, and a lot of hangovers the next morning. People
all over America will watch on TV as the ball drops in Times Square,
New York even though for people in California, the new year won’t
begin for another three hours!
Then after New Year’s Eve, people will say “Happy New Year,” to
each other for a few days, mistakenly write the previous year’s
date on letters and forms, and in less than a week, stores will
have begun setting up their Valentine’s Day displays and the
new year is old news.
I imagine that the reason for New Year’s relative uneventfulness
overseas stems from the massive celebrations that come just before
the New Year holiday. Whether it’s Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa,
or simply the days off from work, that is the time of the year
where most people want to be with their families and travel gets
as crazy as you can imagine. There are countlessly more traditional
activities, foods, songs, TV specials, and other events to keep
people so busy with merriment than when New Year comes around,
people probably just want to let their hair down and have some fun.
With all of the traditional greetings, meetings, and eatings of
the Japanese New Year, you can’t help but feel that it’s a much
more significant and meaningful event over here. But there is one
New Year tradition in America worth mentioning, and that is the
New Year’s resolution. Many people use the coming of a new year
as an opportunity to “start over” and decide to make a significant
change in their life such as quitting smoking, getting more exercise,
saving money, or taking up a new hobby. My resolution for 2012?
To not hit the Snooze button on the alarm clock ever again!
