End of year greetings by John Nolan
On saying goodbye to the Year of the Rabbit and being grateful for our lives.
This was one of the most tragic years on record. Many people were lost in
earthquakes in Japan, New Zealand and Turkey. Others died from a deadly
tidal wave and more recently from a terrible hurricane and at the beginning
of this year, a flood damaged many areas in Australia and Thailand. I would
like to offer my sincere condolences to all the people who have lost someone
this year. In other news, this year also saw the Arab Spring take place.
While democracy may take hold in many of the countries in the Arab world,
it will be at a high cost. Leaders were assassinated and many people died as
a result and many of these countries are still experiencing instability.
Yet, according to Steven Pinker’s most recent book “The Angels of Our
Better Nature 人間の本性に住まう善良な天使たち”, we are living in an age
where violence is nearly non-existent compared to the past. Violence and
war have seen a rapid decline over the past 1,000 years. It’s not easy to
see the bright side in the world today, where smaller countries who are at
war continue to cause misery. But Pinker’s book measures the number of
deaths in wars and shows that this number has indeed fallen. The discovery
that fewer people are dying in wars all over the world can stop us from
thinking negatively about the world we live in. It can also give us hope
that poorer countries who are at war will in time end their battles. After
reading the book, we can understand what caused the decrease in numbers and
begin to act in ways that are helpful to mankind. I highly recommend everyone
to read this book.
Next year will be 2012, the year of the dragon. It will be an important year.
The EU financial crisis remains unresolved. Japan is still suffering from
economic problems. The new leader of North Korea has not been elected and
the United States will have a presidential election and perhaps a new president.
I certainly hope that next year will bring better news and more prosperous
times for the people living around the world.
Finally, one of the songs from the 1996 hit musical and then later Hollywood
movie, “Rent” is called Seasons of Love. The musical Rent was based on a
Puccini Opera title La Boheme. The songs and music were written by Jonathan
Larson who died just as the musical hit Broadway. Part of the lyrics are as follows:

525,600 minutes is the number of minutes in one year. How do you measure a year?
Most of us do not think about how many minutes in a year let alone a month or a
week. But as I get older, I realize that the number of minutes we have in this
world are rather few. If a man lives to be 78 years old, he will have lived for
28,000 days. We need to remember that our time is limited. We need to cherish
every moment we can and try to always feel gratitude that we are alive.
How do you measure the time in a year? I want to ask you to think about that and
try to make every moment count in 2012. Happy New Year!
