Leveling Up Your Language part 2

As I promised in the last article, I would like to share with you
some techniques and methods I have used for studying Japanese and
how effective they were.
I should preface this with the fact that I took one year of Japanese
in high school and four years at university, one of which was spent
in Japan itself. There really is no substitute for a regularly
scheduled class, teachers to speak to, and the constant barrage of
assignments and tests to keep you on your toes. But the classes
you take should make up the foundation of your foreign language
education, upon which you can build using your own tools and materials.
Choosing these tools and materials yourself is the next step in
determining the enjoyment and rewards that come from all of your
hard work. Now I have always loved music, and music was the first
avenue that I took to pursue my language studies independently.
One of my dreams upon coming to Japan was to sing J-Pop songs at
karaoke. I had been listening to a number of Japanese bands for
awhile, even though I could still only understand about 3% of the
lyrics after three years of studying Japanese. One of these groups
was L’arc~en~Ciel, and when their album REAL came out in 2000,
I just happened to be in Japan to be the first of my friends to buy it.
I quickly fell in love with all of the songs, and was determined to
sing my favorite, “Stay Away” at a Japanese karaoke box.
But at the time, I could not read the scrolling Japanese text on
the karaoke screen quickly enough. I needed to study the lyrics
closely and commit them to memory if I was going to pull off this
great feat.
I sat secluded in my room with a notebook, listening to the song on
repeat and transcribing the lyrics from the CD insert one at a time.
I looked up each unknown word in a dictionary and wrote its definition
on the opposite page. Three hours later, I had the whole song written
out in a crude translation, plus the sound of all the words echoing
in my head. I then practiced singing along with the CD, and a few weeks
later, I finally sang it at karaoke, to everyone’s great surprise.
Occasionally, I would come across words from that song’s lyrics in my
daily life and already know what they meant. It was the first of many
songs that I copied down in that notebook and sang at karaoke for the
amusement (and amazement!) of my peers.
It’s important to reiterate that I really, really loved all of these
songs and never got tired of listening to them. If you choose a song
to study and it begins to irritate you after a few listens, it may be
time to find a new song or a new focus for your efforts. But if you
can find some music that you’re almost certifiably crazy about,
I highly recommend it as study material, even if you don’t plan to
perform it.
