Leveling Up Your Language part 1

I often joke that the reason I came to Japan was to get the good
video games before my friends in the U.S. The actual reasons are
many and difficult to explain, but getting the good games early
is a very real benefit. More importantly, though, it has served
as a major motivation to master the Japanese language, because
the games are not nearly as enjoyable without it.
This month saw the release of a very popular Japanese video game
franchise’s 25th anniversary collection. A re-release of the
first three games playable in their original formats. And since
I am a fan of the classics, I picked this up and was once again
playing these games from my youth, but with one key difference:
the games were now in Japanese. 25-year old 8-bit all-hiragana
Japanese. The graphics from that era simply didn’t support kanji
in the game’s text, and 10 years ago, I would have been grateful
for this, but now I actually find it more difficult to read
Japanese without the benefit of those once bedeviling Chinese
characters.
I take this as a good sign. It’s not the first and won’t be
the last game I play in Japanese, but this like every other
game has taught me new words, expressions, and ways to look
at the language. And that sounds like a lot to take in,
but it requires surprisingly little effort as long as you
genuinely enjoy the way it’s presented. For example did
you know that “ふるきいいつたえ” means “an age-old legend”
or that a “せいなるほこら” is a “holy shrine?” I’m not
quite sure how or even if I would have picked up these words
if not for this game.
It is important to have actual enjoyable and satisfying goals
when it comes to something like studying a foreign language.
I meet many students whose only outlet for English is using
it at work, and while that may be professionally
satisfying, it never sounds particularly enjoyable. It’s
probably more difficult to pick up new expressions when you
know that the only place you will use them is in a mandatory,
potentially stress-filled situation. On the other hand, if
you’re able to defeat age-old digital antagonists, participate
in online chats, or watch bizarre foreign TV programs by using
your acquired skill just because it’s fun, then that is,
as we sometimes say, *a horse of a different color.
This is not to say that video games, chat rooms, and TV are
adequate substitutes for a proper classroom education with
qualified instructors. It is extremely important to have a
firm foundation in the language and someone who can answer
your questions and correct your usage. But once you become
equipped with the necessary items (to use some more gaming
imagery), you can begin using them independently, and that’s
when the adventure really begins.
In upcoming articles, I would like to describe some more
‘methods’ that my friends and I have used in our quest to
learn Japanese. I hope that they will give you ideas for
how you can apply the English that you have acquired and
warp you to the next levels of study and enjoyment.
