Independence Day and Today

In less than a month, Americans will, without fail, get into their
cars for family trips, relax and drink at barbecues, and generally
enjoy their 4-day weekend. Politicians will make speeches. Veterans
will march. Fireworks will fill the skies. That is how Americans
celebrate the 4th of July, Independence Day in The United States of
America. In fact, it is a holiday that can tell us a lot about
American culture.
Most obviously, the speeches, marches, and fireworks show a degree of
unified pride in America that its people usually do not show. The USA
has so many different people with so many different attitudes and
opinions that is rare for its citizens to agree on anything.
Patriotism is most commonly used as a tool or prop for advancing some
cause to which only some people subscribe. On the 4th, however, you
see Americans unified in their desire to celebrate as each sees fit.
The variety of celebrations is indicative of the diversity of the
people. Some would say that that is the defining character of the
American experiment: the melting pot in which people from all over the
world contribute to a blended, and yet heterogeneous, culture.
American food mirrors American character. What is American food?
With notable exceptions like corn and turkey, nearly all cuisine in
the USA is borrowed from other countries. Another example is music,
for which America’s native forms — jazz, blues, hip-hop, funk,
zydeco, country, and folk — are blends of music from European,
African, and Native American traditions. The truly American thing
about this variety is that it is assimilated into a whole, while
simultaneously flaunting its heritage.
One of the greatest cultural traditions in America also derives from
the Independence struggle: favoring rebellion over respect and
submission. In the Revolutionary War, Americans rebelled against
British authority. Americans are still defined by that rebellious
streak. Americans consistently vote against taxes and wrangle with
issues of civil liberties. Distrust of government is a powerful
sentiment that manifests in liberal gun ownership laws. In fact, it
is difficult to imagine the Hollywood film without the rebel figures,
from Paul Newman’s “Cool Hand Luke” to James Dean’s “Rebel Without a
Cause” to Neo in “The Matrix.” Americans have a stubborn pride in and
love for the underdog that stands up to authority.
Of course, there are some negative comparisons to be drawn as well. A
popular event on The 4th is the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in
Coney Island. How appropriate that a country so rife with obesity
should celebrate its national foundation day with a contest to consume
piles of fast food. That Americans celebrate by jumping into their
cars for long drives in the heat of summer highlights the importance
of the car to American life. While driving expresses freedom, it also
shows America’s slowness to accept its responsibility for global
warming.
Truthfully, the way we celebrate any holiday can tell a lot about our
culture. However, national foundation is such a defining event that
it carries a greater significance. If The 4th of July can tell us so
much about The United States of America, what can February 11th tell
us about Japan?

バイオ分野やメディカル分野の学習は、本を読んだり講義を聴いたり、
座学だけではなかなか理解するのは難しいものです。そこで、この
「バイオ実験ツアー」では実際に実験を行い、バイオテクノロジー
についての理解を深めていきます。
＜実験内容：DNAの抽出＞
本実験では生物試料からDNAの抽出および精製を行い、アガロースゲル
電気泳動法および分光光度計（紫外部吸収法）を用いて物理化学的
な性質を解析します。電気泳動ではゲノムＤＮＡの大きさ
（分子サイズ）、紫外部吸収法ではＤＮＡの濃度および純度を
確認します。自らが選択した生物材料からどれくらいの量と純粋な
遺伝子（ＤＮＡ）が抽出できるか、その大きさはどれくらいかを
確認します。
場所：東京バイオテクノロジー専門学校
