Eating American

What is patriotism but the love of the food one ate as a child?

It is probably well known that most Americans love their food, and
I am no exception. As I plan for my trip back home to the United
States next month, my mind repeatedly returns to the dining I intend
to do during my stay. The excitement and anticipation of seeing my
family and friends is nearly matched by that of taking a bite of a
roast beef sandwich. While many of my favorite tastes of home can
now be found in Japan with a little effort (peanut butter, mac and
cheese, Campbell’s soup, etc), one would be hard-pressed to recreate
the authentic American dining experience.
When I’m asked about “American cuisine,” it is not always easy to
list particular dishes that find their origin in the United States.
Sure, we have barbecue, McDonald’s, and apple pie to our credit,
as well as turkey, corn, and cranberries which were first discovered
in the new world. But do these really define the heart and soul of
our American food culture? It certainly doesn’t carry the same
national identity as the Japanese washoku staples of rice, raw fish,
and pickled vegetables.
So I thought that while it might be cynical, perhaps the outstanding
feature of American cuisine is the sheer amount of food available.
In “amount” I wish to include every meaning of the word from
variety to quantity. The variety part is a no-brainer. With so many
ethnic groups represented, it is only natural that those countries’
foods would find a home in the U.S. But it isn’t until you see just
how much food arrives at your table that you know you are truly eating
American.
A tower of pancakes oozing with pads of melted butter and maple syrup,
a platter of buttermilk biscuits smothered in half a liter of sausage
gravy, and a mound of cubed “home-fry” fried potatoes with
all-you-can-drink coffee - just your average breakfast set at the local diner.
It sounds like a gross exaggeration - surely no restaurant would serve
something so massive and hazardous to its customers. I assure you that
they would and they do. With so many restaurants competing for American
appetites, they also must appeal to that primal urge of getting more.
Servers angling for better tips also bid for favor in this fashion,
buzzing by your table several times during the meal to offer you a
drink refill.
We certainly don’t have the healthiest eating habits, but we are incredibly
well fed, and I think it’s a miracle. It would be my wish that we all
take a moment to appreciate this from time to time. I will be doing my

the United States:
Mmm, it’s good! おいしい！
Wow, this is so good. うわ～、これメッチャうまい。
It tastes like heaven. まるで天国の味だ
Are refills free? （飲み物の）おかわり自由ですか？
Could I have a refill, please? おかわりください。
I couldn’t eat another bite. おなかいっぱいでもう一口も食べられない。
I think I might explode. おなかがいっぱいで破裂しそう
Could I have a box for this, please? お持ち帰り用の箱をいただけますか？
