A Little Courtesy Goes a Long Way (and sometimes too far) by Mark Addison
Hello again, good readers. This week’s article dips into the murky waters of
politics and the equally dark water of the media that covers it. While I
generally try to keep my frustrations with these two bodies quiet, I just
couldn’t let this one slide.
When U.S. President Barack Obama visited Japan for the first time last
week to meet with Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, the critical issues on
the table were the relocation of a U.S. Marine base in Okinawa and Japanese
aid to American efforts in Afghanistan. Apparently, these stories were too
boring for the American public, as neither of them got as much coverage in the
U.S. media or generated as much discussion as Obama’s bow to Emperor Akihito
when meeting him at the Imperial Palace.
Critics of Obama immediately seized the opportunity to bash the President for
looking weak in the eyes of the American public. “The bow was too low,” and
“The President of the United States should bow to no one,” were among the
opinions of the lowliest blogger to former Republican Vice President, Dick Cheney.
This is not the first time that Mr. Obama has faced criticism from his detractors
over such seemingly non-issues. Earlier this year, Obama was labeled “elitist”
for talking about arugula (a not-so-well known leaf vegetable), and “effete” for
ordering a hamburger with Dijon mustard rather than the typical American fair of
deli-style or yellow “ballpark” mustard. For a while, this latter was even being
called “Mustardgate,” a play on the name of the Watergate scandal which ultimately
brought down the presidency of Richard Nixon.
To try and defend something like a person’s condiment preference usually means
falling for the trap of trying debate something as silly as “Is jelly delicious?”
But as for this “Bowgate,” I’ll take the bait.
When I saw the video of the “incident,” I didn’t think much except, “Hey, he bows
better than me.” And I’ve been practicing for almost ten years. I bow to everyone
from my supervisor at work to the convenience store clerk. It’s a friendly gesture,
and it’s usually appreciated.
President Obama’s bow to the Emperor of Japan came from an equally friendly place.
It was not a ceremonial declaration of subservience, but rather a polite greeting.
Even if you believe that an important man like the President of the United States
should bow to no one, the fact is that you don’t win friends in Japan by being
arrogant and throwing your weight around. Even if you find it awkward for a
foreigner to imitate another country’s customs, it shows a willingness to cooperate.
At a time when international cooperation is more important than ever, a friendly
bow should probably be the least of our worries.
