今週は、ILC大阪校でビジネス英会話やディスカッションクラスを
担当している、Rebecca先生の「ごみ-garbage」のお話です。
Did you know that the amount of money Americans spend on garbage
bags each year surpasses the Gross National Spending for more than 90
of 210 of the Worlds countries? I was slightly disturbed to read
this fact, but as I thought about living in Japan, I realized this
was probably true for most westernized countries, my country Australia
included!
While I try to do my best to cut down waste, sometimes it is totally
unavoidable when purchasing products. For example; when purchasing
goods from my local convenience store, even a simple bottle of milk is
put into a bag with a couple of straws thrown in. I often say
“kekko desu”, but if I am too slow, I will be loaded up with a whole
lot of unnecessary items such as plastic spoons, chopsticks and straws
as well as another plastic bag to add to my garbage bin. I think most
people aren’t thinking about saving the environment when they go to
the convenience store, but surely all of this waste adds up!
Sometimes I wonder how many trees are chopped down each day to supply
the disposable chopsticks and millions of receipts we immediately throw
away? I think that the results would surprise us! Where do all the
thousands of plastic bags go once we throw them into the bin? Surely
just reducing these convenient but unnecessary products would do a lot to
ensure the longevity of our environment.
In a country of 127 million people, I think Japan could do a lot to
save the environment from destruction. Not just by recycling, but by
saying NO to unnecessary products. Instead of using disposable chopsticks,
carry your own around or instead of using plastic bags, use earth bags or
carry products home in your hand (- hands are very useful things).
I really look forward to the day when western countries of the world spend
more money on important things that benefit the world instead of garbage
bags! And I especially look forward to the day when I don’t have to say
no to excessive waste every time I buy a bottle of milk from the convenience store!
